A newspaper article titled "Murder Mystery" begins the novel, reporting of the murder of Mary Turner at the farm at Ngesi, Southern Rhodesia (modern-day Zimbabwe), where she lived with her husband, Richard "Dick" Turner their African houseboy has confessed to the crime.
